GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - The Opening Cruise at the George Lakes Yacht Club on Sunday 3 September marked the opening of the 2017/2018 sailing season.
The opening was preceded by two races in a brisk, cool southeaster with the Verhagen Trophy at stake. A good fleet of twenty-four boats were on the water.
In the first race, the Fireball of David Laing and Chris du Toit was able to extend its customary lead over the fleet, pursued by the Hobie 14s of Michael Colyn and Hans Delport. The Sonnet of John-Mark and Joy Olivier was able to get in front of the Lasers, that had Charles Norman up front. There were four Dabchicks enjoying the conditions, with the leading pair, Jason Reid and Matthew de Villiers well up in the fleet.
The Fireball of Georgou Divaris and Ferdinand Holm joined the second race. They wasted no time in taking the lead and were able to pull away from the Laing/Du Toit Fireball, finishing over two minutes ahead. The Olivier Sonnet finished just ahead of the leading Lasers - Henry Paine and, close behind, Maurits Lammers. David Laing won race one and Geourgou Divaris race two. However, the Sonnet of John-Mark and Joy Olivier was second in both races and achieved the overall win to receive the trophy.
