MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Mossel Bay Advertiser has been reliably informed that following an incident off the coast of Mossel Bay, three bodies have been recovered.
Following an enquiry to the South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa), it confirmed that a search and rescue operation is currently underway following reports of five persons overboard approximately 47 nautical miles (about 90km) offshore of Mossel Bay.
Although Samsa said it is unable to provide further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident, due to the ongoing search and rescue efforts, a source confirmed to the Advertiser that there have been three casualties thus far, leaving two of the five people still unaccounted for.
The Advertiser confirmed that two bodies were transported to the George Airport by helicopter, and the third is being transported back to Mossel Bay with a rescue team. The team’s estimated time of arrival is approximately 22:45.
Samsa said the incident was reported to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre South Africa, which has activated and is coordinating the ongoing search and rescue response.
Samsa said it would provide further updates as and when verified information becomes available.
