Update

GEORGE NEWS - Two men appeared in the George Magistrate’s Court earlier today, Tuesday 29 September, in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 21-year-old man at the McDonald’s drive-through in Courtenay Street.

Justin Jafta and Craig Nelson are facing charges of murder and assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.

The accused remain in custody after their first appearance. The matter was postponed to Thursday 1 October for a bail application.

The deceased, whose age was initially reported by police as 22, has since been confirmed by a family member to have been 21.

According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, the deceased was involved in an altercation with a group of men at about 02:25 on Sunday 27 September. He sustained a stab wound to the chest.

He was transported to hospital, where he was later declared dead by medical personnel.

The circumstances and motive surrounding the confrontation remain under investigation.

McDonald’s responds

Millicent Maroga, impact director at McDonald’s South Africa, said the company was deeply saddened by the incident and extended its condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and loved ones.

“The safety and well-being of our employees and customers remain our highest priority and [we are] fully co-operating with the South African Police Service as they conduct their investigation into this matter,” Maroga said.

She said the company’s thoughts and sympathies were with all those affected by the loss.
