GEORGE NEWS - Last Sunday was another day of light wind sailing for the George Lakes Yacht Club sailors, who competed for the Sotheby's Trophy. There were fourteen boats sailing, of which eight were Lasers, plus three Dabchicks. Two races were sailed, with the wind lightening such that a third race could not be held.
In the first race, the Lasers of David Laing and Malcolm Osborne were first to mark one, with Henry Paine, Bill Turner and Brian Musto in pursuit. Osborne established a small lead up the second beat, with Paine catching up with Laing. Osborne took line honours, with Paine overtaking Laing up the final beat.
In the Dabchicks, Conrad Holm established a big lead ahead of the others of this type - Sean Vonk finished just ahead of Anthony Alant, but three minutes behind Holm.
Henry Paine and David Laing were initially contesting for the lead in the second race, until Paine pulled ahead. A bit behind was a trio consisting of Turner, Musto and Osborne. Up the second beat, Osborne and Turner caught up with Laing. Turner and Osborne chose different courses to the finish line, but both arrived together, with Osborne just seconds ahead.
