This year is the 12th annual event and takes place under the auspices of NSA (National Skateboarding Association) in association with Joe Maloof, Red Bull, Element Skateboards & Volcom, which has a clothing range as part of its portfolio.
George is the third leg of the South African tour which includes Johannesburg and Durban and culminates in Kimberley, where the Maloof Money Cup will be held on 28 to 30 September.
The Maloof Money Cup is the largest and richest skateboarding event in the world and will host the top professionals from all corners of the globe.
The inaugural event was held in 2008 in Orange County, California. In 2010 they expan-ded to New York and Kimberley, South Africa.
As of 2011, the Maloof Money Cup is held in New York, South Africa, and Washington, DC.
Six groups participating in two qualifying heats each, with three to four skaters per heat, played off to a tense finale with the best skater per heat qualifying.
The locals featured strongly, with Quentin Mooiman, Gerard Le Grange and Reamo Leluma three of the six finalists.
The winner, Capetonian Alan Marola, walked off with a R2 000 prize as well as other sponsored prizes and a wild card entry to the Main Amateur Contest.
Second place was taken by George's Reamo Leluma.
This Saturday the 13th Annual Skatelab Skateboarding Competition takes place and the Annual Skatelab BMX Competition on Saturday 14 July.
