GEORGE NEWS - Disc Golf George will be hosting its first league series over the next three months, starting on Saturday 25 March.
Between four and six events (weather dependent) with nine holes each will be hosted. The league will be played at Rooirivierrif sports fields.
The first event, on 25 March, will start at 09:00 and conclude at 13:00. Events will follow every fortnight. This league series is open to new and regular players and every league round will have prizes for the best 3-par scores. Scores will be tallied at the end of the series to determine best overall players.
The top 10 scorers will be entered into league finals that will take place on 3 June.
Disc golf is a flying disc sport in which players throw discs, similar to frisbees, at targets (baskets). The rules are similar to golf, with players starting out at a tee and aiming to reach the target in as few throws as possible.
League format
There will be two divisions for this series: new players (competitors who have never played or have attended a maximum of two of any of the Disc Golf George practice sessions) and regular players (eligible for prizes). As the series progresses the need for further divisions may arise.
Competitors will be required to book their tee-time by 13:00 the day before each event. Payments can be made at the event or through electronic transfer.
Each league will cost R60 per person, which includes 2 discs, a putter/putt and approach, and a mid-range/driver (R50 for players not requiring discs). Additional discs can be provided at a cost of R30 per event.
Players will be able to reserve preferred discs for their next round. An up-front booking of three rounds can be done at a cost of R150 (R120 for players not requiring discs).
Only competitors over the age of 16 will be eligible to compete in this league (excluding regular younger players as determined by the Disc Golf George committee). Young competitors are encouraged to play, but in a social format, time slots will be made available at every round at a reduced fee for social rounds.
A pot will be accumulated gained from entrance fees over the league events for an ace throw. This will accumulate through the ongoing leagues until there is a winner.
"This is an exciting step for Disc Golf George to grow the sport as well as provide participants a great day out," says Dr Leon Strauss, one of the organisers. "We will have prizes for winners at the end of the league as well as spot prizes at each event. The sport attracts a valuable demographic for a wide variety of businesses. They may contact us if they would like more details of our advertising options on baskets, tees, discs and prizes. We are actively looking for sponsors."
Strauss says disc golf is one of the fastest growing sports worldwide and South Africa disc golf participation, course development and events hosted are on the rise.
