GEORGE NEWS - The Women and Girl Commission of the Eden Sport Council held a “Boeresport” day at the Van Kervel sportsgrounds last week for girls in celebration of Women’s Month.
Cllr Charlotte Clarke, Deputy Mayor of George and Cllr Elizabeth Stroebel, District Commissioner of the Women’s Commission of SALGA, the South African Local Government Association, were part of the dignitaries who attended the function and addressed the young women in attendance. Girls that participated in rugby, tug of war, fencing, egg on a spoon, sack racing and other events were part of the day.
Cllr Clarke encouraged the girls to dare to be different. She quoted Craig Townsend, a mental trainer, who once said, “If you want to be different to other players, take a different approach. If you want to be just like other players, do what every other player does. The choice is very easy.”
Clarke also quoted her son who said, “Why must I swim in the direction every fish swims, I want to swim in my own direction.”

Alecia Snyman (17) from Van Kervel School address the girls. She received South African national colours in tug of war.
Cllr Stroebel said sport has a huge potential to empower women and girls. “It promotes social cohesion and challenges the mindsets and prejudice of people. There is good evidence that participation in sport can help break down gender stereotypes, improve girls’ and women’s self-esteem and contribute to the development of leadership skills.
