FOOTBALL NEWS - No George Local Football Association (Geolfa) or Safa matches will be allowed to take place on George municipal sport fields until Geolfa has sorted out its internal issues in the boardroom.
This was the outcome of a meeting between the municipality and Geolfa that took place at Outeniqua Stadium on Friday 21 April, following social action on Saturday 15 April by soccer teams that have been suspended from the league.
Seventeen teams were suspended from the league for participating in the Woz' uzoba bona Thembalethu Easter Tournament without Geolfa's written permission. Members of some of the suspended teams gathered at the Lawaaikamp Stadium on 15 April, preventing other league fixtures from being played.
According to Granville Campher, manager of sport in the George Municipality, the municipality requested a meeting with members of the soccer fraternity to discuss the way forward. "After lengthy and sometimes heated discussions it was concluded that it is important for the parties to first settle their differences in the boardroom," Campher said.
"It was made clear by the representatives from the disgruntled clubs that they will not allow the scheduled matches to continue until their perceived grievances are resolved. It was therefore decided to close the municipal facilities for all Geolfa/Safa matches until further notice."
Before any soccer-related activities can resume, Geolfa must provide written confirmation to George Municipality that their differences have been cleared up.
