FOOTBALL NEWS - The unhappiness of clubs affiliated with the Geolfa League that has been simmering under the surface for about a year, erupted last week when club members picketed on the Lawaaikamp Stadium soccer field, preventing fixtures from being played.
This comes after 17 teams were suspended from the Geolfa League because they took part in the Woz' uzoba bona Thembalethu Easter Tournament without Geolfa's permission.
Angry scenes played out between the league committee members and the players at the stadium on Saturday 15 April and the police had to be called in to restore order.
The teams were protesting their suspension, claiming that there is no signed Geolfa constitution that prohibits affiliated teams from playing in other tournaments, and thus no set of protocols to follow in such cases.
The situation was taken in hand by the police, who managed to send the unhappy parties home with the understanding that they have to sort out their differences internally.
Clubs have long been unhappy with the conservative way the league is being run and want a new executive to be elected that would bring new ideas and more progress to the league.
They have however been waiting since March 2022 for a congress date to be set and now demand that the Safa Eden president steps in by setting a date for the congress where they can vote in a new committee.
The Geolfa committee declined to comment.
The George Local football developers were also at the Lawaaikamp stadium on Saturday morning, protesting against the Geolfa ruling decision.
