Max Gruenewald, the general manager of football for Ajax, said that the Saasveld Campus is the ideal training venue for the team. "Normally we start off our pre-season training at a high performance sport centre. This year we decided to use the week as a team building exercise as well. The accommodation at the campus is exactly what we want; no TVs in the rooms. The players can't disappear and plug in their PlayStations; they are together as a team."
This camp will provide the technical team with the opportunity to evaluate some of the players who are on trial with the club.
The training fields at Saasveld received the thumbs up from the technical team. "The fact that there is no disturbance here is the biggest bonus; we are working on our fitness levels.
"We always aim high and hope to be the champions. We will see if we are on track halfway through the season and then make the necessary changes. We still have time for two or three signings before the transfer period closes," said Gruenewald.
Mark Tommy, support manager of football at NMMU, said that the Madibaz from the Port Elizabeth Campus have come to George to identify local ta-lent. "Effectively, the NMMU Madibaz is the number two varsity team in the country. Last year we lost to 'Tuks' in the finals of the Varsity Football Competition."
Tommy added that this game is about measuring themselves against quality. "It is easy to start a game well but realistically we must be able to finish and maintain our structure and tactical discipline."
Lance Davids scores from the penalty spot in the 27th minute after an NMMU handball.
