South Africans have missed those chain-saw celebrations and his predatory instincts kicking in once one end of the lower middle-over opens up. Perhaps the missing ingredient has been a lack of self-belief, not the increasing injury-rate after the age of 30.
Steyn, 32, is certainly not overly concerned about those mishaps the past year. “The injuries I got last year were freak injuries. I feel good and hopefully the body will be fine. I am very fit and raring to go,” he told www.supersport.com in an e-mail interview.
During an 11-year period as test cricketer, Steyn captured 406 wickets in 82 tests, while remaining at or near the top of the ICC test bowling ranking since 2008. His strike-rate of 41.7 remains the best ever for a cricketer who has operated for a minimum of 10 000 deliveries or more.
Steyn is upbeat about his 11 wickets at an average of 10.27 in the NatWest T20 Blast, which included 4-18 against the Kent Spitfires.
Approached after that match-winning performance, he told www.glamorgancricket.co.uk that he’s loving it, just to feel that vibe again, feel that energy flowing about taking wickets.
"Just to get back into that (wicket-taking) mode, when you don't do it for a while, you miss it, you almost forget how to do it," he added.
