ATHLETICS NEWS - Boasting a total of 47 medals of which 19 are worth their weight in gold, South Africa held on to their substantial lead set on the opening day to be crowned overall athletics champions of the AUSC 5 Youth Games on day 5, with Saturday being the final day of the competition.
It had been clear by the end of the competition on Friday, when the 2018 champions amassed 45 medals with the lead of 18 golds, which direction the overall honours were going.
The athletics team is part of Team SA, managed by Sascoc (SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee) at the multi-code Games which officially end tomorrow in Gaborone, Botswana.
Despite the sweltering sun that reached 40 degrees over three days, the South Africans seemed to acclimatise quickest and shook off any nerves to take an early competition lead on the medal standings.
The load of the day was left to the relay teams where the lone gold came from the 4x100m Women (Rogail Joseph, Antionette van der Merwe, Nicola van der Merwe, and Rose Xeyi) who clocked 47.15.
The only other medal was silver from the 4x100m Men of Silusapho Dingiswayo, Sifiso Miya, Tristan Farao and Breyton Poole, who stopped the clock at 41.63
