It was a productive long weekend for SA track and field athletes, with two women achieving the qualifying standards in their events for the Rio Olympics.
On Saturday, long jumper Lynique Prinsloo launched a 6.78m effort with her final attempt to win her specialist discipline at the SA Student Championships in Limpopo.
Prinsloo, turning out in the colours of the University of Johannesburg, was three centimetres (3cm) short of her three-year-old personal best but sailed 8cm further than the required standard of 6.70m for the multi-sport Games in August.
On Monday morning, distance runner Dominique Scott shattered her 10 000m career best to finish 15th at the Payton Jordan Invitational in California.
The US-based athlete, representing the University of Arkansas, finished 15th in 31:56.84, dipping well inside the required time of 32:15.00 to be considered for Rio selection.
She knocked nearly 15 seconds off her previous best, set at the same meeting last season, and became the third SA woman after Elana Meyer and Colleen de Reuck to break the 32-minute barrier in the 25-lap race.
