ATHLETICS NEWS - With the shadow of a possible unfavourable IAAF ruling looming large over her season, Caster Semenya dusted the troubles off her shoulders to dominate the 2018 season, remaining unbeaten in her main event and racking up records and gold medals as she went.
Semenya started the year aware that the IAAF would rule at some point in 2018 whether she would have to take medication to lower her testosterone levels, or if she’d be free to continue to compete without hormone-altering drugs.
Semenya was racing against the clock – and only the clock since her rivals struggled to keep pace with the 27-year-old who was competing unshackled after having gone off the testosterone-suppressing medication in 2015. And it was wonderful to watch.
The athlete from Polokwane competed in the 400m, 800m and 1000m and 1500m in the 2018 season and she set new South African records in each of those events. Semenya won gold and two silvers at the Continental Cup for the 800m, 400m and 4x400m Mixed relay respectively. She completed a golden double at the Commonwealth Games for the 800m and 1500m and added two golds for the 400m and 800m at the African Championships.
