GEORGE NEWS - It is no secret that George will be getting a new political head. The million-dollar question is who will it be? Those who want it, may not get it, and the rest are not keen to take custody of this "delinquent child".
The DA announced its plan to redeploy the DA George constituency head, Tertuis Simmers, at the end of last year, at a press conference by the Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Anton Bredell.
Bredell said Simmers will be replaced by an MP or MPL "who is less involved in the caucus's affairs". This coincided with a drastic reshuffle in the George mayoral committee.
Simmers confirmed earlier this week that it is proposed that he heads up both Oudtshoorn and Kannaland, but the decision ultimately lies with the provincial executive committee and will only be ratified later this month.
Information has it that the Deputy Speaker of Provincial Parliament, Piet Pretorius, was proposed to take the reins in George, and Jaco Londt, DA regional chairperson, to take over Mossel Bay.
Freshly elected
The Democratic Alliance (DA) held its elective congress in Pretoria last weekend, where they established who will lead the party for the next three years and into the 2019 national elections.
Mmusi Maimane was re-elected as the party leader, together with James Selfe (federal council chair) and Athol Trollip (federal chair). Michael Waters, Ivan Meyer and Refiloe Ntsekhe are the three deputy federal chairpersons. Dion George has been elected as the federal finance chair.
Some changes were suggested for the DA's policies and constitution, such as the approval of a recall clause.
The party's constitution review committee is currently looking at including a clause in the party's constitution, allowing it to recall any of its public representatives in government.
This addition to their constitution will make it a lot easier to get rid of "dead wood". The DA congress also resolved to conduct all disciplinary hearings in camera.
