GEORGE NEWS - Local members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) will take part in the national shutdown planned for Monday 20 March by taking part in a peaceful protest.
"We will be peacefully protesting down York Street with our placards," said the EFF Western Cape provincial secretary, Mbulelo Magwala.
"We do not intend for it to turn violent, no tyres will be burning and we won't violate anyone's rights or stop them from going to work."
Magwala confirmed that he was in George earlier this week to finalise the picket, but said that they simply want their voices heard.
"We don't want violence. We will walk down York Street peacefully and we won't be handing out memorandums, because as you know, that doesn't work," he said.
According to a letter by Magwala that has been delivered to various businesses in George, the national shutdown is a cry to rescue the future of this country and all its citizens.
"We demand a steady supply of electricity, to end load-shedding and call for the resignation of Cyril Ramaphosa. This day must be seen for what it is, a day of freedom where all people join hands to protect our nation," he said.
Other issues that will be in the spotlight are that of taxi impoundments, lack of job opportunities, high crime levels, drug abuse and poor service delivery by the government.
"Enough is enough. We must act now!" said Magwala.
