It's unclear what caused the carriage to burst into flames, but all passengers escaped with no injuries.
The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service and the navy are battling the blaze.
The city's Liesl Moodie says the fire has also affected vegetation.
“Currently, the vegetation fire is spreading towards the mountain slopes. We have city firefighters in attendance who are being assisted by two helicopters who are water-bombing the fire.”
Meanwhile, Kanonkop Wine Estate has lost 50 tonnes of grapes in the Simonsberg Fire.
