NATIONAL NEWS - An 11-year-old boy from Empangeni turned his father’s gun on himself after he fatally shot his 2-year-old sister while playing with the weapon.
Police said the tragedy occurred on Saturday at about 23.50 pm.
“An 11-year-old boy was playing with his father’s licensed firearm when a shot went off and struck his two-year-old sister. The victim was taken to hospital for medical attention where she later died,” recounted police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thembeka Mbhele.
“The brother allegedly turned the gun on himself after seeing what had happened to his sister.”
Mbhele said police were investigating a case of murder. An inquest into the deaths will be held.
Police urged gun owners to ensure that they safeguard their firearms and warned that failure to do so was a criminal act.
