According to Britain's Auto Express, the reinvented Scirocco could form part of Volkswagen's I.D range of electric models, and use the same dedicated MEB platform while retaining its coupe looks. It also states that outputs for the all-electric Scirocco could range from 125 kW to 221 kW in the performance R, with an estimated range of between 200 and 375 miles (320-603 km).
As the MEB supports the fitment of front and rear electric motors, the Scirocco EV could also debut with four-wheel drive as opposed to the current front-wheel drive only model.
“For me, we can only use [Scirocco] for a sporty two-door coupe. We are not clear on how we will do such a car, and are thinking whether we do an interesting concept based on our electric platform; this could be a great and fun car," Volkswagen R&D Head Frank Welsch told the publication.
"You don’t buy a Scirocco if you have a family. If you tell someone, ‘This is a Scirocco’, they have a clear idea of what this should be and of what it should look like. We are working on a concept for emotional cars. Volkswagen always has an offer for emotional cars".
One of the oldest models in Volkswagen's line-up having debuted in 2008 on the same A5 platform as the Golf 5, the Scirocco has seen minimal updates and revisions, with sales topping out at 10 725 units in Europe throughout the entire twelve months of 2016.
In terms of looks, the Scirocco will most likely incorporate elements from the I.D hatch, while the interior will feature a minimalist design with a range of autonomous tech.
