Introduced last year on the Vitz (Yaris), Prius PHV, Harrier (Lexus RX), Mark X, Voxy, Noah, Prius C and Prius V (known as the Aqua and Prius Alpha in Japan), the 86 GR Sport slots in below the more extensively tuned GR model, and gets black 17-inch alloy wheels, a new front splitter and side skirts, red Brembo brake calipers, a new boot spoiler and choice of three colours; Crystal Black Silica, Crystal White Silica and Pure Red.
More minor are the changes inside, where the GR Sport receives a small diameter leather wrapped steering wheel, contrasting silver stitching, a GR instrument cluster and GR badging on the start/stop button.
Opt for the optional range of GR parts, and the 86 can be outfitted with a unique rear spoiler and splitter, choice of two alloy wheel designs, different steering rack and rear suspension, as well as a race time recorder and bespoke graphics integrated into the seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
As mentioned, the 86 GR Sport is kept as is underneath the bonnet, where the Subaru sourced 2.0-litre Boxer engine, upgraded last year, outputs 153kW/212Nm. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard with a six-speed automatic being optional.
Pricing for the 86 GR Sport kicks-off at ¥3 780 000 (R469 211), but as the GR brand is restricted to Japan for now, don’t expect it to make it to other markets, including South Africa, anytime soon.
