The Rivale is certainly a very attractive machine - it was voted the most beautiful bike at last year’s Milan motorcycle show. It makes use of a three-cylinder 798cc engine that was designed and is produced by MV Agusta. It is a compact unit thanks to clever manufacturing techniques such as chill-casting of the engine block. The counter-rotating crankshaft is similar to those used on MotoGP bikes. The engine produces 92kW and 84Nm and is coupled with a six-speed gearbox yet it only weights 178kg, which should make it very nippy through the city.
As with many modern bikes, there is no shortage of electronics to keep everything in check. The MVICS system has been designed to work with all three-cylinder MV Agusta machines. The system comprises of a ride-by-wire throttle system as well as a host of features that can be operated via the control panel on the handlebars. Riders can choose between four engine maps, namely sports, normal and slippery road. The fourth allows for all three to be customised by the rider, like engine response, rev limiter, torque as well as brake sensitivity.
The Riviale 800 will be made available in SA in the second half of 2014 with pricing to be confirmed by the manufacturer at a later stage.
