While only expected to enter production at Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles' (FCA) Toledo, Ohio plant a year after the regular Wrangler, the renderings of the internally named Wrangler JT and four door JTU (utility) appears to confirm previous prototype sightings with a raked window, revised version of the iconic seven-slot grille, new headlights, reshaped bumpers and expansive load box.
Although FCA has remained mum on the new Wrangler's technical details, jlwranglerforums.com claims that the newcomer will be powered by a new 2.0-litre turbocharged "Hurricane" petrol engine, a revised version of the current 3.6-litre Pentastar V6, and the controversial 3.0-litre CRD (EcoDiesel) turbodiesel V6 used in the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 pick-up.
A ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic gearbox will replace the outdated Mercedes-Benz based five-speed automatic currently offered, while some markets could also get a six-speed manual.
As well as a redesigned interior with upgraded materials, new dashboard, a 8.4-inch UConnect touchscreen infotainment display, push button start, heated steering wheel, relocated grab handles and a larger boot, the JL will reportedly also receive a new front axle and Dana Independent Rear suspension, although it remains to be seen whether the latter will be fitted to the JT/JTU.
The Wrangler JT/JTU will serve as the first pick-up Jeep since the XJ Cherokee-based Comanche went out of production in 1992, and also indirectly replace the long discounted Dodge / Ram Dakota as FCA's smallest pick-up.
