Set to follow the same route as the AMG GT R instead of being released under the Black Series moniker, the R will reportedly be based on the regular C63 sedan and coupe and make extensive use of carbon fibre to same weight, as well as featuring revisions to the suspension and interior.
More significantly though, the R could be powered by a more powerful version of the C63's 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8, with some 600 horsepower or 447kW being mulled, a figure just shy of the 450kW produced by the E63 S 4Matic+. The increased output could also result in the R adopting the E63's 4Matic system and 9G-Tronic 'box.
While Mercedes-AMG is yet to confirm the rumours, if the hardcore R does indeed became a reality, expect it to debut around 2019 when the current W205 generation C-class receives a mid-life facelift.
