Aimed directly at the forthcoming BMW X7 M and Range Rover, the AMG GLS 63 gives away its identity by sporting the now trademark AMG GT R derived Panamericana grille, flared door sills, covered, wider front air takes and fatter alloy wheels likely to measure in the region of 21-inches.
Set to feature the same MBUX infotainment as the A-class and more recently, the new GLE, the GLS 63 will however come with unique interior touches such as AMG specific seats, the AMG sport steering wheel and aluminium inserts, as well as the multi-mode AMG Dynamic Select system.
Whereas the standard GLS, pictured above, will be powered by the same assortment of turbocharged straight-six petrol and diesel engines as the GLE and S-class, with V8 versions of the former and mild-hybrid models expected, the 63 will wave goodbye to the 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8 and opt for the smaller 4.0-litre twin-blower that will allegedly produce in the region of 441kW.
On par to produce the same amount of power as the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 taken from the BMW M5 that will allegedly power the X7 M, the mill in the GLS 63 will be connected to a revised version of the 9G Tronic automatic gearbox, and, despite its smaller capacity, improve on the current model’s 4.6 second sprint time from 0-100km/h.
Although BMW will take the covers off the X7 later this month, the GLS, according to speculative reports, could either debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show next month or in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, with the AMG 63 following at a later stage.
