Following the unveiling of the xDrive35i earlier this month as the new flagship model, the smallest oil burning X2 still comes with a 2.0-litre mill, but which now produces 118kW and is badged xDrive18d with an eight-speed Steptronic gearbox standard.

Claimed to consume diesel at a rate of 4.9-litres/100km and able to sprint from 0-100km/h in 9.4 seconds, the xDrive18d replaces the 140kW xDrive 20d as the starting point of the X2 range, although the latter can be had with front-wheel drive and the same automatic ‘box. In this guise, fuel consumption is rated at 4.7-litres/100km with the benchmark sprint taking 7.9 seconds.

In addition to the new engine, the BMW has also added the so-called Advantage Plus pack which comes with an anthracite headliner, pearl chrome detailing and gloss black inserts, Cruise Control with braking function, sport seats, Park Distance Control, Y-spoke 18-inch Ferric Grey polished alloy wheels, gloss Shadow Line exterior trim, LED headlights and optional M sport seats with M safety belts.

Available in Europe from November, it remains to be seen whether any of these additions would make it into the local X2 range, but expect it to occur in 2019 if approved.
