GEORGE NEWS - The residents and youth in Zone 7, Thembalethu, celebrated Freedom Day in a rather unusual way on Thursday morning, 27 April.
Instead of just coming together for festivities, they used the opportunity to pave a way for tomorrow's leaders by founding a youth soccer club and cleaning up a field where the players can train.
The event was organised by the regional chairperson of ActionSA, Samuel Kutela, who lives in Thembalethu and plays a fundamental role in youth development in the area. His work is aimed at providing healthy activities for children to help prevent them getting involved in social ills.
"We all know that Zone 7 in Thembalethu is one of the areas that are tainted and plagued with anti-social activities such as crime, drugs and alcohol abuse," he said.
After founding the Royal Kutela Football Club for boys and girls, the group set out to clear Themba Cast, an area where the youth of Zone 7 like to gather, by cleaning it up and cutting the grass to provide a better training space.
It was not only work, though. Attendees were entertained with music and some of the boys also played street soccer.
"It was a beautiful day," said Kutela. "A big thanks to ActionSA for making this day possible, as well as to everyone who attended the Freedom Day celebrations."
The Royal Kutela Football Club was established during the Freedom Day proceedings.
