GEORGE NEWS - The University of the Third Age May programme offers a wide variety of topics.
On Wednesday 11 May at Armchair Travel, Geoff Carter will present a talk on the Otter Trail. Considered by many as the most beautiful hiking trail in South Africa and among the finest in the world, the Otter Trail is a fairly challenging five-day hike of 45km, including steep ascents and descents.
Opened in 1968, this trail gives one a view of the spectacular coastline from Storms River to Nature's Valley and you can enjoy the fynbos and forests and perhaps see the Cape clawless otter.
This talk was compiled by Geoff and his wife Su who are keen hikers and lovers of nature. The talk starts at 10:30.
The Border Reivers
On Friday 20 May, Helen Grant will give a talk entitled "The Border Reivers" who are also known as the Steel Bonnets. This talk will give a brief outline of the turbulent times on the Anglo-Scottish borders between the late 13th century and the beginning of the 17th century when murder, blackmail, feuds, political manipulation, and corruption reigned supreme.
It will also mention the beautiful poignant ballads that were written about the events of the times, showing a remarkable musicality and romanticism despite the hardships the people suffered.
Grant spent much of her childhood and teenage years living in the Scottish Borders; thus history was a daily experience, and this proximity to an area steeped in the wealth of the past sparked Grant's love of history and her belief that we should always learn from the past.
Tea is at 10:00 and the talk starts at 10:30.
Ukraine - a personal encounter
At the general meeting on Wednesday 25 May, Hugo Leggatt will give a talk on "The Ukraine - a personal encounter". Tea is at 10:00 and the talk will start at 10:30.
