GEORGE NEWS - Saturday 5 August dawned bright and sunny for a small group of volunteers that regularly meet to upgrade and maintain the Newton Street park.
Three local businesses lent a hand to make this day a success. AM Skips donated the use of one of their skip bins for the day.
Wendy and Laurenzo Gelderblom of LG Waste donated the green refuse bags used on the day, while Hooked Fish and Chips donated a platter for a lucky draw that was entered by all the volunteers.
Speaking to the committee members about the park and its maintenance, they mentioned that this playground is a beacon of hope in the local area. All upgrades and maintenance are done out of the pockets of the volunteers and committee members and they rely on donations from the public.
David Hyman and Letitia Smit spoiled the volunteers with delicious hotdogs and juice after a morning of hard work. A special word of thanks to Jimmy Smit who always helps with supplying the electricity from his home for the work that needs to be done using power tools.
Fundraising events are in the initial stages of planning. Any individual or business who would like to get involved in this community project is welcome to contact Jan Stander on 079 448 9926.
