GEORGE NEWS - The Vic Bay Quad, in memory of John Pfaff, has gone from from strength to strength the past seven years. On 24 and 25 May, 90 surfers from across the country battled it out for the coveted memorial trophy.
The five participating teams were the Cape Surfriders (Western Cape), Cape Winelands (Boland), the local Eden Surfriders, Nelson Mandela Bay Surfriders from the Eastern Province and the team from Border, Buffalo City.
According to David Pfaff, the standard of surfing was incredibly high throughout the event.
"The event this year was run in a sudden death format, which meant that the top two riders in each division advanced to the next round. Each surfer was awarded points for their respective positions within the tournament, and surfers fought hard not just to win their own heat, but also to win points for their team. Prizes totalled around R80 000," he said.
After two tough days of competition, Natasha van Greunen (Cape Winelands) took top honours in the women's division, Stephen Hair (Eden) the over 50s, Wayne Monk (Buffalo City) the over 40s, Tyrell Johnson (Buffalo City) the over 30s and Josh Faulkner (Nelson Mandela) the open division.
