The security guards are members of the Southern Cape Workers Forum that represents various employees in the security industry.
According to Thembinkosi Mzamo, organiser of the Southern Cape Workers Forum, the security guards marched to the department to voice their grievances against the security companies that don’t comply with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act: Sectoral Determination 6 in the Private Security Sector.
“Some of these companies do not pay their workers overtime if they work on a Sunday. They don’t even pay them bonuses. The conditions they work under are sometimes very dangerous and they are not given any proper weapons to protect themselves against criminals,” said Mzamo.
