GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - About 200 Red Ants (contracted demolition workers) have started demolishing informal structures, most of which are still under construction, next to the cemetery in Asazani at the back of Thembalethu.
They are accompanied by the Public Order Police.
There are about 100 structures on this piece of land.
The illegal squatters started staking their claims about 2 months ago and the George Municipality has been aware of the intention of the mostly backyard dwellers to erect homes on the land for more than a month.
The land belongs to Provincial Government.
Unrest is expected to follow as violent housing-related protests were at the order of the day on Wednesday 12 July in Thembalethu. During this protest, several vehicles were damaged in stone-throwing incidents, and 3 were set alight.
More information to follow as it becomes available.
