Timothy dreams big

GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - Musical dreams have been part of Timothy Joseph's life since he was eight years old. Now at 19 Timothy is coming into his own, and living his dream. Competing at Talent Africa recently was a light-bulb moment for Timothy.

"At the provincials here at the George Arts Theatre, I decided to sign up during the break. I spoke to the lady at the front desk, found out if I still could compete, payed and just played for them. I did not know I would get the highest marks," he says.

He performed his own composition, The Greatest Showman. "I was awarded best artist and in Port Elizabeth I came first in my age group and was awarded best instrumentalist and best technique."

But for Tim it's not about competing, it's about playing his music. He only recently started competing and performing and at last year's eisteddfod he received A++ in both cello and piano for the four pieces he played.

Michelle Joseph, Tim's mom, says her boys were home-schooled and she initially wanted them to play sport, but because they were not part of a school, they could not be part of a team. "So I thought, why not music? They were taught to play piano by ear, and Timothy later learned how to read music."

She says her house is always filled with music and it's wonderful because music is also a stress release for her sons. "I always know the kind of day they had by what and how they play."

Michelle says she supports their choices to play, practise and compete or not.

Timothy is her middle son and he wants to be an independent musician. "I want people to listen to my music and enjoy it. But I want to write and play my own music."

He can play piano, cello, guitar and violin and has already started composing his own music. He is currently in matric at Glenwood High School and next year he would like to travel and explore his music.
