"It’s simply a matter of economics; for every sticker we sell the first R4 comes directly to the George APD and the balance goes into the national pool that gets divided among the nine provinces and then allocated to the various beneficiaries."
Marie du Toit, the admin finance manager at the APD, says that Abel, the official Casual Day mascot, is available for promotional work. "Any school, institution, business or shopping centre can contact the APD and we will gladly make the necessary arrangements so that Abel can boost awareness for the plight of people with disabilities."
Casual Day is next Friday 5 September and this year the theme is Bring out the Bling; encouraging people to dress up, not down, to celebrate 20 years of the Casual Day campaign.
Du Toit is happy that the APD has crawled into the hearts of the community and many individuals and companies raise money and awareness for the APD. "On Casual Day plus one, Saturday 6 September, Midas Vehicle Parts and Accessories is organising a golf day at the Rooi Rivier Rif Sports Club. All proceeds go to the APD." Last year Midas donated a bus to the APD’s Optima Day Care Centre. A fully kitted Wendy house, which is used as a classroom, was bought with the income from the 2013 Midas Golf Day. "This has enabled us to increase the number of children in our care from 30 to 50."
Casual Day is South Africa’s most successful fundraising project for persons with disabilities – R24,8-million was raised last year. Sponsored by The Edcon Group, Casual Day is the flagship project of the National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Africa (NCPPDSA), which this year celebrates 75 years of service to the community of persons with disabilities.
The beneficiaries of Casual Day are the NCPPDSA, South African National Council for the Blind, South African Federation for Mental Health, Deaf Federation of South Africa, Autism South Africa, Down Syndrome South Africa, National Association for Persons with Cerebral Palsy, South African National Deaf Association, National Institute for the Deaf, Alzheimer’s South Africa, South African Disability Alliance and QuadPara Association of South Africa.
Casual Day stickers are also available from Edgars, Jet, JetMart, Boardmans, CNA, Red Square, Legit, Absa outlets, Game, Shoprite and Checkers stores.
For more information contact Marie du Toit at the APD on 044 878 0063 or 044 878 0987.
When you support Casual Day locally, a portion of the funds will be utilised by the George Association for Persons with Disabilities (APD). Pictured here is the APD building in Olympia Drive, Pacaltsdorp.
