GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - After the horrific death of a pregnant dog in Mossel Bay and four pups found dumped in a black bag in George two weeks ago, the Garden Route SPCA (GRSPCA) has launched a sterilisation drive.
"Jessica was found hanging in a tree, her feet barely touching the ground. She endured terrible suffering as she tried to keep her body in the air to avoid suffocation until her legs were so tired that they could no longer support her.
"In the same week we found a litter of two-day-old puppies tied up in a black plastic bag; thrown away like garbage to die a slow and painful death. Luckily we could manage to save them," said GRSPCA manager, Salomé Bryuns.
However, says Bruyns, cases like these can be prevented by sterilisation.
By raising R675 000 they can sterilise 1 500 dogs and cats at a cost of R450 each.
"1500 sterilisations will mean between 8 000 abd 15 000 less puppies and kittens per year to worry about in the future," said Bruyns.
Their goal is to have the money raised in time for Women's Day on 9 August.
