GEORGE NEWS - A difference in the interpretation of a letter served on George traffic chief Donovan Saptoe seems to be at play in the ongoing suspension drama surrounding him.
Saptoe left his office on 22 October on receipt of the letter in question, titled "Precautionary suspension pending a disciplinary hearing" and signed by Municipal Manager Trevor Botha.
Although the last paragraph of the letter indicates that a determination will be made whether Saptoe will be suspended or not after consideration of his representations, the title of the letter suggests more immediate measures.
His absence from office for roughly a week is now being considered as absence without leave (AWOL). This was communicated in a second letter he received last Friday, 1 November, which informed him that he had been suspended until further notice with immediate effect.
Saptoe is facing a disciplinary hearing into his alleged misconduct.
He is accused of not adhering to lawful and reasonable instructions from the Director of Protection Services, Steven Erasmus. His conduct is alleged to hamper service delivery and pose a threat to the functioning of the department.
Law Enforcement head Richard von Willigh is currently acting as head of traffic.
