GEORGE NEWS- The South African National Civics Organisation (Sanco) has threatened a total shutdown of George if their demands over a multitude of grievances are not met.
On Thursday 28 November, Sanco members, escorted by die police and traffic officers, marched peacefully from Fourways in Thembalethu to the George Civic Centre to hand over their list of demands. It was received by George Mayor Jackie von Brandis.
"We come here peacefully, but make no mistake: if you do not take this matter seriously, there will be a total shutdown," said Sanco regional chairperson Xolisani Booi to Von Brandis.
"This is not a threat; it's a promise. Our people have had enough of being taken for granted by this municipality."

Von Brandis thanked the marchers and their leaders for ensuring that the march was peaceful and assured them that their grievances will receive attention.
Main concerns listed revolve around the living conditions and governance within the municipality.
The memorandum demands urgent action on various issues, including the high electricity tariffs, which have led to mounting debts for residents and businesses. The municipality is urged to stop blocking electricity and to implement a 'one shack, one box' programme to prevent illegal connections.
Additionally, there is concern over the indigent policy, with calls for transparency and a review of its implementation.
The organisation also demands better management of sewer systems, improved recreational spaces, and the provision of proper access roads in informal settlements.

Other pressing issues include the impoundment of taxis, lack of taxi stopping areas, and the competition between Go George buses and taxi operators. Furthermore, they are dissatisfied with the municipality's handling of the fatal building collapse in Victoria Street and demands answers.
The community has given the municipality seven working days to respond to these concerns.
