Several cellphone towers in the Oudtshoorn and Mossel Bay area have been hit.
In light of this, precautionary action has been taken at the construction site at the Pacaltsdorp flyover interchange. By encasing the hazard lights with razor wire, the traffic department and construction company hope to protect the solar panel and back-up battery from vandals and thieves.
A solar panel that delivers a small amount of electricity to power an essential strategic point away from a conventional electrical source is a simple and relatively cheap solution to a complicated problem.
A flashing hazard light can be set up anywhere on a highway as a safety precaution and a solar panel with a back-up battery is an ideal way of powering a mini cellphone repeater station.
But, because we live in good old SA, razor wire is part and parcel of this high-tech deal.
