Update
GEORGE NEWS - In December 2016 an allegedly intoxicated man from Blanco brutally killed a puppy in a fit of rage. The incident reportedly happened after he told a mother, her child and their dog to move away from him, and when they did not respond fast enough to his liking, their puppy paid the price.
He hurled the little canine to its death and then cruelly cut off its head and waved it at the woman and child.
SPCA inspector Gerda Reynders attended to the call by the traumatised woman and laid a charge of cruelty under the Animals Protection Act against the man.
The post mortem verified the woman's account of the puppy's death and the case went to trial.
The accused pleaded guilty. He will be sentenced on 20 April.
The Garden Route SPCA is gaining slow but significant ground regarding the rights of animals.
The SPCA is grateful to the municipality, police and the courts who take these cases seriously. More and more animal abusers are receiving harsher sentences for such offences, which is a big step in the right direction for SPCAs countrywide.
