GEORGE NEWS - The George East and Garden Route Mall branches of the Post Office have closed down.
According to Johan Kruger, a spokesperson for the post office, both branches were merged with the George Industria and George post offices.
The owner of the building where the George East Post Office was located, has already started with renovations to accommodate a new tenant.
He did not want to reveal the name of the business that will be moving in, but said he was excited for them. "The renovations are not major. We are closing the postboxes and moving the entrance as well as the steel fence," said the owner, who wants to remain anonymous.
According to Garden Route Mall manager Rion Olivier, the space taken up by the mall branch will be occupied by Wonderland. "They will take occupation on 1 June and will open their doors at the end of June."
Kruger said the employees at the two branches were deployed at the George and George Industria post offices. "The postboxes of the Garden Route Mall remain on site where they were, and the postboxes of George East have been moved to George Post Office. Postbox renters do not have to change their postal addresses."
In 2010/2011, the George East Post Office won the national Post Office Operational Excellence Award (with a score of 97,5%) and Customer Services Excellence Award.
The Garden Route Mall Post Office in 2011/2012 was the best branch in the Western Cape in the annual Speed Services Couriers awards.
