GEORGE NEWS - Parkrunners would never guess how much work last Saturday's bergwind created for those working behind the scenes. A strong wind came up shortly after runners and hikers finished their weekly exercise regime at the Garden Route Botanical Garden.
According to Emile Evert, a member of the George parkrun management, many hours of sweat ensured that keen participants of the weekly parkrun would be able to enjoy the route this coming Saturday. Huge trees had to be removed manually after being blown across the pine forest path. Branches and other debris had a team of workers busy for most of the weekend.
In a joint effort by Hillbillies MTB club, Chad Lahana of GTR Trail Team and Sakkie van Zyl of Magic Moppers, it was a hard morning's work clearing more than 40 trees from the trails in the forest. About 10 trees were uprooted on the parkrun route alone.
However, Evert said it was all worth it. "The parkrun is enjoyed by about 500 participants every Saturday morning. For some this is the highlight of their day. Of course it was incredibly hard work to clean the path, but it was so worth it."
