GEORGE NEWS - The Association for Persons with Disabilities (APD) held a disability sensitisation training session at George Herald last Friday, helping staff have a better understanding of how to interact and accommodate persons with disabilities.
APD community development worker Glen Fortuin explained that a person with a disability is someone who is hindered from participating fully and effectively in society on an equal basis with others as a result of physical, psychosocial, intellectual, neurological or sensory impairments.
"People with disabilities want to be independent and the absence of accessibility or the denial of access leads to them missing out on opportunities to be a part of the community as an equal," said Fortuin.
As part of the training, two George Herald staff members performed their daily work in wheelchairs supplied by APD for use on the day.
