Southern Cape Police spokesperson, Captain Bernadine Steyn said the 31-year-old male suspect was arrested at 04:00 and will appear in the George Magistrate's Court on Friday 20 June on a charge of murder.
Queba, a chief negotiator for the taxi industry engaged in talks with the municipality and the provincial department of transport regarding the planned bus transport network for George, was shot inside his own taxi on the N2 near the Thembalethu off-ramp on Sunday morning 25 May.
Video footage at the Garden Route Mall on the morning of his death apparently formed part of the evidence that the police gathered after the murder. The video allegedly shows Queba, driving his taxi out of the mall, being stopped by the occupant/s of a white taxi. They spoke for a couple of minutes before Queba went on his way.
It is rumoured that Queba was assassinated due to his involvement in the negotiations regarding the bus network that is meant to replace the taxi industry in George. Following the murder, other negotiators have been placed under police protection and the George Herald has heard that security measures are being intensified following the arrest of Queba's alleged killer.
The George Herald has been told that a small fringe section within the negotiation process is unhappy with the agreed amounts to be paid for taxi permits, as this could also impact on the amounts offered in other cities and towns when the public transport system is rolled out nationwide. George is set to be the first B municipality to implement the network and is seen as a trendsetter as well as an experimental model for the rest to follow.
