GEORGE NEWS - In the first event of its kind given by Denneoord Primary School, the Carpe Musicam! Orchestra joined forces with the school's choirs, George-South Primary School's Brass Group under Karl Ackerman and Denneoord's brand-new recorder ensemble.
This group, which started receiving partially sponsored tuition from Carpe Musicam! members in January this year, really made their mark with their confidence and neat ensemble work in their two items - Ode to Joy and the theme from 1492 - Conquest of Paradise.
This item was performed last by the orchestra, recorder ensemble and massed choirs, and brought the audience to their feet. Important though the concert was for the performers, it was a milestone for Denneoord whose music programme ceased years ago due to lack of funding.
Their excellent choirs have been voluntarily kept alive by dedicated staff members, and the school is now very excited to have learners being instructed in instrumental music again.
It has been proven that playing a musical instrument stimulates all sections of the brain and can lead to greater intellectual capacity in young people.
