They offer this service to, among others, Carpe Diem School, a school that caters for mostly physically disabled children, as well as Wonderboom, a private school specialising in autistic, ADD, ADHD, and children with emotional and other disorders.
According to owner Andre Lewarne, children are also referred by physiotherapists, occupational and speech therapists, and children with learning problems, such as dyslexia, come for equitherapy and benefit from the intense treatment they receive.
"To say that we witness miracles every day is not being blasé, or attention-seeking. We do. The healing that takes place when a special-needs child and a horse connect, is profound," she says.
"Many times we cannot explain what happens. We just know that healing on many levels occurs, and the child benefits enormously.
"The physical benefits are many - balance and co-ordination improve, core muscle is strengthened, concentration and attention span increases, and self-confidence and motivation are developed, to mention but a few."
Rainbow Riders is in the process of moving to the George Riding Club, and will be operational from their new home as an integral part of the club from January next year.
Andre says they have to repair the block of stables allocated to them, and have approached a few companies, asking for donations. "The reaction has been incre-dible. PennyPinchers not only has given us the most wonderful service, but also has had a client, who overheard us talking about our project, donate four bags of cement. Thank you, sir!"
Paul Visser of Builder’s Trade Depot has given Rainbow Riders a load of planks and has promised more.
Andre Fourie of Bolt and Tool World has supplied all bolts, nuts, screws and chains, and has loaned his equipment to do the work.
Tuinroete Agri presented them with a voucher that enables them to purchase to the value of R800.
Nick and Caroline Irish of Outeniqua Miniature Horses very generously donated enough poles to complete the working arena.
Andre Botha of Bucchleugh Contractors has sponsored rosettes to be used at their first show.
"It is so wonderful to be the recipients of such generosity, especially in the dreary economic climate we are experiencing. I would like to be able to broadcast my thanks and appreciation for such kindness throughout South Africa, so that everyone knows what a special place George is," smiles Andre.
Of course, they need much more.
If there is anyone who would like to contact Andre to find out what they need in the line of roofing, waterproofing, guttering and cement, she will gladly give details.
They also need sponsors, as there are children whose parents simply cannot afford to continue with equitherapy. "We are looking for a sponsor who will help us to purchase hard hats. And if any horsey people are reading this, we are always looking for second-hand tack! And of course, if you would like to come and help, all volunteers are welcomed with open arms," she says.
