WESTERN CAPE NEWS - Eden FM is now the third largest community radio station in the Western Cape with a weekly listenership of 163 000 people.
This is according to the Broadcast Research Council of South Africa (BRC), an agency appointed in 2016 by the National Department of Communication to do research on listenership figures of all radio stations and viewership numbers of television stations.
The research was done between January and June 2017 in the main towns of the Southern Cape (excluding rural areas). Radio Tygerberg in Cape Town and Radio Zibonele in Khayelitsa, also in Cape Town, have respectively 202 000 and 198 000 listeners per weekday.
There are 40 community radio stations in the Western Cape. From the 274 community radio stations in the country, Eden FM now holds the eigth position in terms of its listenership.
According to station manager Morné Pietersen, the radio station must follow its mandate to serve the region's listeners with programmes to inform, educate and entertain the listener.
The radio station places a high premium on the broadcast of local and positive news.
