GEORGE NEWS - A 33-year-old man drowned at Gwaing River Mouth yesterday, Saturday 17 October.
According to NSRI Wilderness station commander, Garth Dominy, they activated their crew after reports of a drowning in progress reached them at approximately 15:10.
“On arrival on the scene a search commenced for a 33-year-old local man who had disappeared under water, reportedly while swimming. It appears that while a group of people were enjoying a day at the beach, one member of the group got into difficulty when he was caught in rip currents during a receding tide,” he said.
Metro ambulance and rescue services, members of the George fire and rescue services as well as local police officers and divers were also on the scene.
NSRI rescue swimmers retrieved the body of the man from under the water and brought him to the shore where he was declared dead by paramedics.
“NSRI are appealing to the public to have a safety conscious mindset around water and to be aware of rip currents around the coast, particularly the stronger than normal rip currents that occur during a tide receding between high and low tide,” said Dominy.
