GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality in conjunction with other stakeholders established a Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC) at a meeting held on 14 February at the Civic Centre's banquet hall.
Una Petersen of the department of social development shared information on the national drug master plan (NDMP), the role of the provincial substance abuse forum and LDAC.
The purpose of the LDAC is to give effect to the NDMP and to compile and implement an action plan to combat substance abuse in the jurisdiction of the municipality. The LDAC has to give annual feedback to the provincial substance abuse forum and central drug authority (CDA).
The George Municipality's departments of social development and health, the police, Sanca, Ithemba Lobomi and Kidstop attended the meeting.
Jonathan Fortuin, chairperson of the newly elected LDAC, said they would like to encourage other role players such as the community policing forums, the department of education and the department of correctional services, other NGOs and community members to participate in the LDAC. The next meeting will take place on 6 March at the banquet hall.
This initiative was championed by Sean Snyman, portfolio councillor of community services, libraries and sport. He said he is positive that a change will come to George through implementing this initiative. "I would like all state departments, NGOs and the community to work together to reduce substance abuse. We need all role players to address the demand reduction, harm reduction and supply reduction," he said.
