GEORGE NEWS - Road repairs and resurfacing in Knysna Road, from First to Fourth Streets, start next week.
Sections of roads will be closed, but two-way traffic will continue with one lane per direction open and access to businesses during working hours ensured.
“The municipality realises the impacts during roadworks are inconvenient, but we ask that road users bear with us for a while. The resultant improved road will be safer, smoother and will benefit all road users,” says Civil Engineering Services Director Regenald Wesso.
The project is most likely to commence Monday, 3 February 2020, and is expected to run into the first few weeks of March 2020, weather and circumstances depending. Work includes repair of the base layer and resurfacing of the road from the edge of the railway bridge at First Street to the Pick 'n Pay/ Hope Church intersection at Fourth Street.
In most cases, the work will be handled block-by-block and may include the closing of sections of street from 7.30am to 5pm daily. Site access will be managed and communicated to affected residents and businesses.
There will be height differences in the road surface while construction repair work is being carried out. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians must exercise extreme caution especially during wet conditions, when visibility is poor and at night. Vehicles with low profile tyres and motorcyclists must take extra care.
“The George municipality apologises for the inconvenience and appeals to road users to be patient and exercise caution during the upgrade. Please look out for and adhere to temporary road signage and roadworks personnel,” said Mr Wesso.
