GEORGE NEWS - The Walk-a-Child-to-School campaign that has been helping school children through donations of school shoes since its inception three years ago, is growing annually.
Last year, 14 schools benefitted from the campaign. This year 21 schools received 40 pairs of shoes each.
A number of school principals and learners gathered at the Conville Community Hall on Wednesday 11 April for the launch of the campaign for 2023 and to receive the donations.
The shoes were handed over by Garden Route Mayor Memory Booysen.
The initiative is annually rolled out jointly by Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM), Eden FM, Vodacom, the George Museum, the Road Accident Fund (RAF) and the Garden Route Mall. These collaborators have a vision to help change the lives of the most vulnerable school-goers.

The programme director at the event, Eden FM station manager Morné Pietersen thanked all partners who put their hands in their pockets to make another success of the campaign this year.
Booysen said GRDM is in discussions with other potential stakeholders regarding a possible new addition to the campaign to address specific challenges that girls struggle with.
He echoed the words of the lyrics sung by the late musician Brenda Fassie, 'Umntu ngumntu ngabantu – we are who we are through other people'.
Each school received 40 pairs of shoes.
