GEORGE NEWS - The Thembalethu Baptist Church resounded with joyful singing and dancing on Monday 18 August as the local police station's Social Crime Prevention Desk hosted its Women's Month event.
Although some of the conversations touched on heavy topics, they were handled with tact and always carried a thread of hope that lifted the crowd to their feet.
The programme featured contributions by various organisations, including the police, CPF, Families South Africa (Famsa), Phakamani, the Department of Social Development, the George Municipality and Gift of the Givers.
In his welcoming message, SAPS Thembalethu's Social Crime Prevention coordinator, Sgt Makoloi, highlighted the ongoing challenge of gender-based violence (GBV) in the community and the need to confront it.
"It is our own sons, husbands, fathers and brothers committing this violence," he said, urging the mothers of Thembalethu to break their silence and to speak up.
Speakers also encouraged the women to show love for one another, share their wealth of knowledge, and support young people in raising their own children. They were urged not to let stumbling blocks or others' opinions stand in the way of living fulfilling lives. This was followed by a meaningful group exercise in which mothers gave each other positive affirmations.

The importance of mental health and self-care was emphasised, especially when supporting someone close who has been affected by GBV or rape. Simple guidelines such as believing in one's ability to overcome challenges, taking time to breathe, going for walks and surrounding oneself with a supportive network of people were highlighted.
A strong message from Legally You NPC's advocate, Marilyn Scheepers-Olifant, was to help by asking questions, having those "small conversations" and then reporting what you know to law enforcement so that justice can be served.
Phakamani Makhosikazi support group chairperson, Ntombi James, who led the congregation in song and dance on several occasions, delivered a powerful message. She encouraged mothers to be proud of their role, to have each other's backs and to keep one another on the straight and narrow.
